"Mỹ Sơn" More Like "Oh My The Sun"

I think it's because we've been going to bed so early that we've been getting up in the wee hours but this is the third day in a row I've woken up at like 5:30am and I'm so over it.  That was probably for the best though because our hotel arranged for us to go to the Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary today.  Mỹ Sơn is one of the oldest archeological dig sites in Indochina containing Hindu temples dating back to the 4th century AD.  It's an hour outside Hoi An by tour bus and the road is bumpy and curvy.  The temple complex is in ruin mainly due to American carpet bombing during the Vietnam war but some structures are still standing.

Today was the official hottest I have ever been.  Getting off the tour bus the heat just hit you in waves.  The temple complexes are built into the jungle in a valley between two mountain ranges and boy,  is it one hell of a jungle. The entire time the temperature never dropped below 40 but with humidity it was more like 45.  Walking around we eventually just began jumping from shadow to shadow.

The extreme heat not withstanding it was a super cool visit. Casually touching and being inside structures that are 1100 years old is pretty humbling.  The entire building complex is made out of bricks stuck together by tree resin.  Apparently they (the temple builders) preferred it because the resign holds its integrity and doesn't chip and decay like mortar does.  A year or so ago students from Italy came and worked to repair some of the damages so it's quite obvious what's old and what's new.  In total the trip to Mỹ Sơn took about three hours and by the end I was fantasizing about the pool in the hotel because I was just drenched in sweat.

Returning to town Jack and I proceed to pool, shower and nap before heading out into the old quarter around five.

Another street food item which we've found are fresh sugar donuts. You buy one and the person literally fries it in front of you.  They're super cheap only ten-thousand Dong (about 80 cents.)

I'm very close to passing out so I think I'll leave it here for tonight.

Off to Hue by train tomorrow.
