Description of Project

This project emerged from a fortuitous encounter during my visit to Kingston, Ontario in February 2020, where I had the opportunity to engage in conversation with the manager of UNDR for Men, a menswear retail store located in downtown Kingston.

The primary focus of this project entailed a comprehensive redesign of their website, a task that gained even greater significance due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Developing an intuitive and profitable online store became imperative in order to maintain satisfactory sales levels.

Using TheWayBackMachine I was able to grab a screen shot of what the website looked like before I started this project. (The image wouldn’t load but there was something there, it wasn’t just a complete blank page.)

When conceptualizing the redesign, one crucial aspect I focused on was enhancing the menu interface. Drawing from my education and experience working with Petals Plus Floral Design, I understood the importance of creating a seamless customer journey. In today's competitive landscape, any bugs or frustrations during the purchasing process can lead potential customers to abandon their purchase and seek alternatives.

UNDR for Men utilized Shopify as their backend hosting and developer. Although I had no prior experience with Shopify, I dedicated time to familiarize myself with its backend functionality. Overall, I found it to be reasonably navigable. We decided to retain Shopify as the platform, as the managers of UNDR were already acquainted with it. It would have been unfair to require them to undergo a complete transition and relearn the intricacies of organizing their online store.

The new and improved menu system.

In my redesign, I addressed two significant issues: the menu/navigation and the search capability. Although not immediately apparent from the front-end, I conducted a comprehensive overhaul of the back-end inventory management system. Shopify's product and category organization can be somewhat complex, requiring time to fully grasp. To properly categorize a product, such as boxer-briefs, it must be assigned to a collection, as only collections can be integrated into the menu system. Consequently, I had to individually relabel each product to ensure accurate recognition within the system.

All in all I am super happy and excited about how this final product turned out. I think the aesthetics reflect a modern, fashionable sensibility and it is significantly easier to locate and purchase the products.
