As Fast As A Tuktuk Travels - 2/2

Now on to the rest of the day.

When we got back into town both Jack and I were about a 7 / 10 on the hunger meter so we immediately decided to hunt down some lunch.  Thinking we were being clever we decided to head in the direction of the Phnom Penh Central Market as that was our destination for the afternoon. Turns out, around the market area are a whole lot of appliance and jewelry stores and not much else.

With rumbling stomachs we finally found a rather shabby looking Chinese food place called the Sam Doo restaurant.  Getting seated and handed a menu we decide and order. I got some bbq pork dumplings while Jack got a rice dish of some description.  As we ate I noticed an older Chinese man walking around every so often.  He was the one who initially gave us the menu, pointed at the dumplings page while saying something incoherent and walked away.  Closer to the end of the meal he walked past our table and under the pretense of courtesy I said, in the way English natives often handle non-native speakers, that the dumplings were very good.  He smiled and walked away.  Then walked back about five minutes later with six deep fried somethings on a plate.

Now we weren't quite sure what the standard operating procedure was for a situation where a Chinese restaurant owner who knows no English offers you mysterious deep fried food. Regardless we (well I) dug ourselves into this situation so we'd ( I ) just have to go with it.

Jack and I talked afterward and we're still not entirely sure what we ate.  I thought it was some sort of meat but he swears there was a tentacle in his so it may have been something aquatic.  Needless to say we ate quickly, paid our bill and left.

Now onto the main reason we ate someone's pet squid and that was to get to the market.  If you can't really picture what I mean by market just think Grand Bazaar meets Asian chic.  There is literally a booth for anything you could possible want, albeit they are mostly (if not all) knockoffs so buyer beware.  In the first five minutes I saw Rolex watches, Louis Vutton bags and Prada shoes. The quality really varies stall to stall so beforehand I would suggest researching what makes a good fake. But in the end Jack left with a Gucci bag and tomorrow, before our flight, I'm after a LV messenger or weekender bag.

I'm done talking fashion.
